Molluscs -Geography Cone

The geography cone (Conus geographus) is a highly venomous, predatory cone snail that is commonly found on reefs within the tropical Indo-Pacific region. This pretty shell, which resembles snow-capped mountains (hence the name), is often found washed up on Cousine's beach.

This species feeds on marine worms, molluscs and small fish, actively hunting to kill its’ prey. It fires a harpoon-like, venom-tipped modified tooth into the prey, which results in almost instant paralysis and allows the prey to be easily consumed.

Although they are not the largest of the cone snails, only growing up to between 10 and 15 cm (4-6 inches) in length, venom from this species is highly potent to humans and as there is currently no antivenom available, it can prove fatal.
