Cousine Island's Oldest Resident

At an impressive age of 132 years (as of 2024), Adam’s longevity and resilience on Cousine Island makes him a key figure in our history. With each slow and deliberate step, he has seen everything Cousine has to offer — from her dark history all the way to her transformation into paradise on Earth.

Adam belongs to the Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa species , a subspecies of the Aldabra giant tortoise native to the Seychelles.

Adam's Origins

Born in 1892, Adam's journey began on Silhouette Island, where he spent his early years before being relocated to Cousine Island in 2011. As part of the Seychelles breeding program, Adam played a crucial role in the conservation efforts aimed at preserving the unique biodiversity of the region. His lineage can be traced back to the colonial era, with records suggesting that he may have been among the founders of the tortoise population on Cousine Island.

Despite his age, Adam remains active and sociable, earning him the reputation as the friendliest giant tortoise on the island. His gentle nature and affectionate demeanour have made him a favourite to visitors and island residents alike.

As Cousine Island's oldest resident, he symbolises the timeless beauty of the Seychelles ecosystem. Through his story, we are reminded of the need to cherish and protect our fragile planet, ensuring that future generations can continue to marvel at the wonders of nature for years to come.

Adam's Remarkable Story

Adam's journey spans over a century filled with trials, triumphs, and the timeless beauty of nature. As a young tortoise, Adam would have roamed freely, grazing on vegetation and basking in the warm tropical sun.

In the early 20th century, Adam became part of the Governor's herd at Government House, where he likely played a vital role in shaping the tortoise population of the Seychelles.

Despite the challenges posed by Cousine’s troubled past, including habitat loss, exploitation, and human encroachment, Adam persevered, adapting to the changing environment and remaining resilient — committed to his home. His eventual relocation to Cousine Island in 2011 marked a new chapter in his long life, offering him a tranquil sanctuary to spend his remaining years.

Today, we look to Adam as a living testament to the strength found in nature and the power of conservation. As Cousine Island's oldest resident, Adam's legacy will continue to live on for generations to come.

What Makes The Gentle Giant Unique?

Adam, affectionately known as Cousine Island's "gentle giant," has unique characteristics that set him apart from the other creatures inhabiting Couine Island.

At 132 years old, Adam holds the distinguished title of being the oldest tortoise on Cousine Island and one of the oldest in the world. Currently, the oldest tortoise in the world is Jonathan at 191 years old. Jonathan lives on the island of Saint Helena, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. But Adam aims to live far longer than his competition — and we’re determined to help him achieve his dreams.

Despite his impressive size and age, Adam is known for his friendly and docile nature. He readily welcomes visitors and loves scratches and affection from those who cross his path. When you visit us, make sure to say hello to Adam.

Adam's front left foot is missing several toes, a feature that sets him apart from other tortoises. We’re not sure how it happened, but throughout his lifetime, Adam has experienced unthinkable challenges. Despite this physical challenge, he moves around the island with grace and determination, and she protects him at all costs.

Adam is described as the "friendliest" tortoise on the island, Adam's charming personality makes him a beloved inhabitant on Cousine Island, always open to meeting new guests.
