Exploring

From time immemorial, man has been an explorer. On Cousine Island, restored to its pristine natural state through a concerted conservation and restoration effort, guests can fulfill man’s deep-seated passion for exploring. Every day offers an opportunity to roam the exotic island and take in the manifold sights and sounds of life.

Our conservation officers are keen to share their knowledge of the island’s exquisite fauna and flora, as well as our conservation programmes, during daily-guided walks along our nature trails. A rich tapestry of biodiversity unfolds as you wander through the verdant forest and along the tropical shores.

Birders can delight in adding rare sightings to their experience during bird-watching expeditions. Since the island supports populations of the Seychelles Warbler, Magpie Robin and Fody, as well as breeding colonies of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, White-tailed Tropicbirds, Lesser Noddies and White Terns, Cousine Island has been identified by BlueLife International as an important bird area.

Guests can become more than observers, if they wish. The custodians of Cousine Island are eager to share their passion for conservation with you by inviting guests to plant an indigenous tree from our nursery. The act of planting a tree creates a tangible holiday memento that keeps growing as time goes by. Guests can also share in the exciting experience of turtle tracking on the island’s pristine tropical beaches. Hawksbill turtles, classified as critically endangered by the IUCN, and rare, endangered Green turtles return time and again to Cousine’s tropical beaches to lay their eggs.

Whether or not you wish to become directly involved, all our guests can take the worthwhile knowledge home with them that they’ve supported our conservation and restoration programmes, simply by visiting our tropical paradise.

Learn about the ingredients and spices used in Creole cooking by having a personal hands-on cooking lesson with our chef. Guests are also encouraged to enjoy their own catch of the day, while nighttime brings magical starry skies with barbecues and bare-foot dining on the beach. All products and ingredients used are sourced locally from the neighbouring Seychelles islands or from Cousine Island’s garden supply of fruit trees, herbs and vegetables. Fishermen on the islands of Praslin and Mahé also catch fresh fish locally and sustainably for our guests. Recipes are provided courtesy of our accomplished team, to take home to enjoy and share with friends and family. Or join in the fun and games on the beach: volley ball, beach bowls, beach tennis, swing ball, soccer and badminton.

Children can join in the fun of designing their own pizza, creating arts and crafts, or building sand castles on the beach. Treasure hunts offer an exciting way of getting in touch with their surroundings, while bathing a tortoise gives them a hands-on opportunity to get to know these grand old members of the reptile family.

Choose to do your yoga routine on the tropical beach. Breathe in the calming scents and vistas of the tropical ocean to soothe your mind and relax your body. Or simply laze about on our comfortable beach mats with large cushions shaded under an umbrella, while enjoying refreshments in between cooling off in the pleasantly warm waters of the tropical ocean.

Sip sunset cocktails on the beach and feast your senses during a romantic, private dinner, or a barbecue on the beach under a starlit sky. Or enjoy the spectacular views of the ocean and nearby islands from the panoramic setting of the Pavilion, the island’s French Colonial hub for social events. Designed to evoke the rich memories of Seychelles’ past, nestled and imbued with romantic ambience, the Pavilion suspends you in unforgettable and exquisite views of turquoise sea and the lush surrounding islands. Relax in the open-air dining and lounge areas, and find some quiet time lost in the peaceful setting of the private library, or refresh and celebrate life at the Gecko bar. Take a dip in the fresh-water pool, or experience unique and flavoursome Creole, Asian and Western meals, prepared with love and passion by our chef extraordinaire.
