Endangered sea turtles are protected at Cousine Island

Hawksbill turtles count under the endangered sea turtles to be found in the Seychelles. Cousine Island has been instrumental in the protection of these endangered sea turtles and offers a safe haven for them where they can come to shore and lay their eggs in a safe environment. We have turtle monitoring teams ensuring the safety of these turtles. We also conduct research regarding their numbers and behaviours. Guests to Cousine Island will have the privilege to see the endangered sea turtles when they come to shore to nest, and during specific times of the year, will also be able to watch the turtle hatchlings return to sea. The Hawksbill turtles have become critically endangered sea turtles because of human fishing practices. Countries like Japan and China hunt them for their meat which in their cultures is considered a true delicacy. Many of the turtles are hunted simply because of their shells which are used in decorative wear. Come and experience the thrill of seeing these rare turtles alive at Cousine Island where the focus is conservation.
