Brilliant snorkel

Yesterday we had the most brilliant snorkel, utilising the calm sea to the max.

Normally this time of the year we seldom get to snorkel off the south beach, due to the large waves and strong currents brought on by the strong South Easterly winds. However, yesterday was a beautifully calm day with the waves in the south easy to navigate. We were really worried about the coral garden that had started growing on that stretch towards the end of last, as the large waves that crash over the area, were certain to cause some damage. Great was our surprise when we not only found a new smaller coral garden, but when we got to the original one, it had quadrupled in size! The water was clear right above the garden and diving down we could really enjoy all the colourful fish swimming about. It would seem that the heavier waves were actually breaking off small pieces of coral and where ever these pieces landed, they started to grow, thus increasing the size of the garden very quickly indeed.

Other great sightings yesterday was a hawksbill turtle feeding on the bottom, a scorpion fish, a lion fish, 2 huge puffer fish and 5 small eagle rays. Absolutely stunning! Now, next time we just need to make sure to take the camera…
