Basic Ingredients of Seychelles Cuisine

Seychelles cuisine has developed a unique taste because of the many influences of numerous cultures over time including, French, British, Arabian, Chinese, African, Creole, and Indian influences. With this melting pot of cultures, you can expect rich Seychelles cuisine at private islands such as Cousine Island. Spices form an integral part of Seychelles cuisine, as do coconut milk, tomatoes, ginger, and chutneys. You can expect many types of curries and will always find the taste of onions and garlic to be exquisite in the way the foods are prepared. Pickles are also used often and of course, the chilli pickle. The curries are thickened by the coconut milk for a unique taste and texture. Fresh fruits and fish, especially octopus, make up a large part of the Seychelles cuisine.
