Background on Hawksbill Turtles

Hawksbill turtles are critically endangered even with their worldwide distribution. They look similar to other marine turtles with their flattened body shapes and their protective shells as well as flipper adapted legs to help them survive in the ocean. The hawksbill turtles can normally be found in shallower sea waters where there are lagoons and coral reefs. They feed on sea sponges often the ones with high silica content. Other prey includes that of jellyfish and comb jellies. Hawksbill turtles are protected at Cousine Island and guests will marvel at the sight of their hatchlings. Guests of Cousine Island can also participate in conservation projects involving hawksbill turtles on the island. When snorkelling look out for adult hawksbill turtles living at the coral reefs where they are often found in underwater cave areas.
