We’ve recorded our 200th Hawksbill Turtle nest!
We were very excited last season when we broke all records and had 113 nests for the whole breeding season. This year it wasn’t only broken, it was thrashed. Yesterday 3 females came up to nest, bringing our total number of nests up to date to the magic 200 mark, more than double the average nests per season! And this season is not over yet…
The female that finally laid nest 200 had been trying to find the perfect spot for her eggs for the last 3 days, coming up numerous times, digging and going back down without laying. She finally found the perfect spot under a low hanging palm tree on the north beach yesterday afternoon and laid 185 eggs. This is her 3rd nest for the season.
So far this season we’ve also released 8008 hatchlings safely to sea.
